Q & A with CARES (Community Alternative Response Emergency Services) Medic

Q & A with CARES Medic, Paco Bonnin

How was CARES developed?

CARES (Community Alternative Response Emergency Services) was developed as an alternative resource for behavioral emergencies that would traditionally get a fire and/or police response. CARES crews are trained and equipped to respond to non-violent emergency calls.

What is the CARES team's role in behavioral health crises?

The CARES role in these calls is the integration of medical and behavioral care from the onset of crisis intervention, with the goals of improving outcomes and diverting patients from emergency rooms and justice system contact when appropriate,

What are the goals of the CARES program?

To provide an alternative resource that can make a meaningful difference in bridging gaps in the continuum of care, making a positive impact on the health and well-being of our patients, and facilitating access to more appropriate and equitable care to historically underserved communities.

Who does the CARES team consist of?

The team consists of two MFD paramedics, Mark and Paco, and two Journey crisis workers, Shequila and Grace.

What communities does the CARES program currently serve?

More information about CARES can be found HERE

Currently, the response area is the central police district in Madison (from the Yahara River to Park Street). However, plans are in the works to expand.

When does the CARES team respond to calls?

CARES is active between the hours of 1100 and 1900, Monday to Friday.

Is there any additional information that would be helpful for the NAMI Dane County community to know about the CARES program?

CARES is dispatched via the 911 center. Callers can request a CARES team responding, but it is not always guaranteed due to call volume, previous calls and other factors. We look forward to collaborating with NAMI to better serve our community.
